"Some tournaments are remembered for the medals. Others are remembered for the experience."

The 39th National Under-9 Open & Girls Chess Championship brought together 430 young players from across India—271 in the Open category and 159 in the Girls category. While the tournament showcased some of India's brightest young chess talent, what stood out equally was the overall experience created for players and their families.
ShareChess was present throughout the championship to observe not only the competition but also the arrangements that often determine how memorable a tournament becomes.
A Beautiful Venue
Hosted at Sarala Birla University, the championship offered a spacious, green campus that created a pleasant atmosphere throughout the week. Having accommodation, dining facilities, and the playing venue within the same campus made movement convenient for players and accompanying parents.

Spacious and Hygenic Rooms with access to 24hour water cooler, lift and power backup.
Food That Players Could Rely On
A well-planned meal schedule with breakfast, lunch, evening snacks, and dinner ensured participants could focus on their games instead of worrying about food. The food was hygienic, served on time, and generally appreciated by families attending the event.
We received the food coupons, which we redeemed daily. The food was always ready on time; we never had to wait.

Entertainment Beyond the Chessboard
One feature that truly distinguished this championship was the attention given to children's overall experience.
Every evening, movies were screened at the G.D. Birla Auditorium, giving young players an opportunity to unwind after mentally demanding games.

Since only one round was scheduled on 10th July, the organizers also arranged a magic show—an initiative rarely seen at national chess tournaments.
These activities transformed the championship from simply a competition into an enjoyable week for the children.

A dedicated and spacious waiting area was available for the parents and guardians, adorned with numerous motivational posters of chess legends to inspire players.

Thoughtful Planning
During the championship, Ranchi experienced frequent rainfall.
In a gesture appreciated by many participants, the organizers provided every player with an umbrella at no additional cost.
Small initiatives like these often make the biggest difference.
Responsiveness Matters
Every large tournament encounters challenges, and this championship was no exception.
What impressed us was the responsiveness of the organizing committee. Queries raised by parents regarding accommodation and other logistical matters were acknowledged promptly, and the organizers genuinely tried to resolve concerns. The effort to keep a lift technician available and arrange generator backup for the lifts during peak hours reflected their willingness to improve the participant experience.
A Tournament Organized with Heart
Throughout the championship, it became evident that the organizers were focused on more than just running chess rounds efficiently.
From inspirational quotes displayed around the venue to comfortable dining arrangements, recreational activities for children, thoughtful mementos for every participant, and smooth daily operations, there was genuine care in the way the event was conducted.
One Suggestion
If there is one suggestion for future editions, it would be the prize distribution.
Recognizing at least the Top 5, and ideally the Top 10 finishers with trophies, would make a national-level achievement even more memorable for young players. Several parents shared this sentiment, and adopting a broader recognition model would further enhance future championships.

The 39th National Under-9 Chess Championship wasn't just well organized—it was organized with heart. AJCA deserves recognition for creating an environment where players could focus on chess while families felt welcomed and cared for.

Attended the tournament with my son. Loved the efforts of organiser from giving us one of the best place to stay in the SBU campus. There were some hiccups regarding lift and hot water but not that big. The only thing we missed and even kids felt disaapointed is not getting trophy, even if you are in top 20. Thanks for covering the tournament sharechess!!!
Beautifully covered about the National tournament. It was one of our finest chess tournament, exceeding expectations. Parents and kids both had a good time.
