May 2026, Jhalawar, Rajasthan: In chess, perfection is rare. Achieving it at a state championship is even rarer. Eight-year-old Viaansh Bhatnagar of Udaipur did exactly that when he stormed to the Rajasthan Under-9 State Chess Championship title, winning all six of his games and finishing the tournament with a flawless 6/6 score.

Held in Jhalawar from May 25 to 27, the Rajasthan State Selection Championship brought together the strongest young players from across the state. Over three intense days of competition, Viaansh remained calm, focused, and unstoppable.
Round after round, he found ways to outplay his opponents. By the end of the tournament, there was no need for tie-break calculations or last-round drama. The young player from Udaipur stood alone at the top of the standings, a full point ahead of the chasing pack.

For those who have followed his journey this year, the result was not entirely surprising.
Earlier in 2026, Viaansh had already announced himself as one of Rajasthan's most promising young talents by winning the Udaipur District Under-9 Championship. He then went a step further by also winning the Udaipur District Under-11 Championship, competing successfully against older players.
Yet state championships are different. The pressure is higher, the field is stronger, and every mistake can prove costly.
Instead of feeling the pressure, Viaansh seemed to thrive on it. His perfect score reflected not only strong preparation but also maturity beyond his years. Throughout the event, he displayed sharp tactical awareness, disciplined decision-making, and the fighting spirit that often separates champions from contenders.
The victory earned widespread recognition, with several Rajasthan newspapers highlighting his achievement and celebrating Udaipur's newest state champion.
The triumph also secures him a place on a much bigger stage.
With the state title now in his collection, Viaansh will go on to represent Rajasthan at the National Under-9 Chess Championship in Ranchi, Jharkhand, where the country's best young players will battle for national honours.
For a young boy who started the year by conquering his district, becoming Rajasthan's Under-9 Champion marks a significant milestone. But judging by his performances so far, this feels less like the destination and more like the beginning of an exciting journey.
As Rajasthan's newest Under-9 champion prepares for Nationals, one thing is certain: the chess community will be watching closely.
